Lewis G. Watkins of Seneca is Oconee County’s only Medal of Honor recipient. He was born in 1925. During the later part of World War II, he joined the Navy and served two years. He returned to Greenville, South Carolina, and graduated from high school in 1949. After graduation, he joined the Greenville Police Department as a patrol officer. He entered the Marine Corps on September 12, 1950, was killed on October 7, 1952, and is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. A memorial in his honor may be found at Wolf Stake Baptist Church cemetery in West Union, South Carolina. His parents donated his medal of honor to the Patriots Hall Veterans Museum in Walhalla, South Carolina.
